Library cards are issued free of charge to individuals who:
- Show proof of residency in Lee County
- Are employed in Lee County
- Own property or a business in Lee County
- Are students in Lee County
- Are residents of other Southwest Florida libraries participating in the reciprocal borrowing program
The following are acceptable proof of residency:
- Florida driver's license or ID card
- tax strap number
- rental lease (for at least 6 months)
- receipt for Florida auto tags
- proof of property ownership
- voter's registration card
- printed checks
- declaration of domicile
- utility bill
- work ID or paycheck stub
- telephone book listing in combination with another form of ID
- school identification card
- consular ID with Lee County address (such as Matricula Consular)
- personalized mail (postmarked within 90 days) delivered to an address in Lee County (only for students or others who do not have another valid form of ID).
- a parent of a child under 12 must sign the child's library card to confirm residency
- students ages 12-17 may have their residency confirmed by a parent or legal guardian who shows valid ID or Lee County Library card

Non-residents must show identification and apply for a card in person. Library card applications cannot be submitted by fax or through the mail. Two types of cards are available:
Additional Information:
- Children under 12 must have a parent or guardian's signature to receive a library card.
- Cards are issued at all locations in the system and can be used at all locations.
- Loss or theft of a card, as well as change of address, should be reported to the library immediately.
- Regardless of where books are borrowed, they may be returned at any Lee County Library System location. After hours book drops are provided at most locations.
