Keeping Safe Online

You’re probably a pro on the computer.  You know all the best game websites and doing homework online is a breeze.  But do you know how to stay safe online?

Here are a few common sense tips to think about when you’re on the Internet:

Don’t share personal information, like your name, address, or phone number.  You wouldn’t walk up to strangers at the mall and give them that information, so don’t do it online either.

Think before you share any pictures or video online.
If it’s something that you wouldn’t share with Grandma, then don’t post it!

Think before you type.
You wouldn’t want anyone to type rude or nasty comments about you on the web, right?  So return the favor and be courteous to others online.

 Social Networking 101

What is social networking and is it safe?

Social networking sites allow people to build communities online – communities based on shared interests, hobbies or experiences.  Social networking through school websites is a great way for kids to work on projects and chat about stuff that’s going on, but larger social networking sites do not offer the same protection.

Some tips for social networking:

Only accept friend requests from people you know.
Set your profile to private, so only friends can see things like photos and posts.
Be careful what you say – think before you write.

Minimum Age Requirements:
Myspace – 14 years
Facebook – 13 years
These are just a few of the many social networking sites out there and minimum age requirements differ.
