Spanish Book Donation from Colombian Journalist

FORT MYERS, Fla.June 14, 2007Mr. Hernando Gomez Oñoro has had a distinguished career as a journalist for El Heraldo in Barranquilla, Colombia. Tonight, he will be sharing a gift with the readers of Lee County.

In an effort to thank libraries for encouraging the love of reading and language, Mr. Hernando Gomez Oñoro along with his son and grandchildren, will be donating a special 40th anniversary Spanish language edition of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “Cien Años de Soledad” (“One Hundred Years of Solitude”) at 7 p.m. at the South County Regional Library.

Library staffers normally don’t celebrate book donations, but say this is a special occasion.

“This title is extremely popular among our patrons and has been widely read throughout the Lee County Library System in both English and Spanish,” said Heather O’Connell, Lee County Library System Community Relations Coordinator.

Although the library has several copies of the title in a variety of formats, special editions normally aren’t purchased for the collection.

”We’re excited that our Spanish readers will be able to enjoy this special edition of “Cien Años de Soledad” in celebration of its 40th anniversary. We’re sure library users will join us in thanking Mr. Gomez Oñoro for his thoughtfulness in providing this gift to the readers of Lee County,” O’Connell said.

Library users can view summaries, reviews and excerpts of the book on the Lee County Library System’s website at www.lee-county.com/library. Click on “Search the Library Catalog” for more information or to reserve a copy.
